چکیده

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare the use of an extended vertical lower trapezius island myocutaneous flap (TIMF) and a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF). METHODS A total of 39 patients with advanced recurrent oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) underwent salvage surgery followed by placement of either an extended lower vertical TIMF or PMMF for reconstruction. Twenty-one patients received extended lower vertical TIMFs, whereas 18 received PMMFs. RESULTS The pedicle length of the TIMF was longer than that of the PMMF, and the skin paddle of the TIMF was both wider and longer than the PMMF. No major complication developed in any of the patients. The TIMF group experienced a lower rate of minor flap failure than did the PMMF group. CONCLUSION Use of an extended vertical lower TIMF, which has a longer pedicle flap and a larger skin paddle than a PMMF, is optimal for reconstruction of major defects. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One stage reconstruction of oral cavity by use of pectoralis major myocutaneous island flap.

The reconstruction of defects in the oral cavity after a large resection of intraoral cancer is relatively difficult because of its specific anatomical char acter and the exposure to infection from the oral bacterial flora. A forehead flap, or a deltopectoral flap, and a recently developped free flap with microvascular anastmosis has been the chosen method for the recon struction of defects in ...

Pectoralis major and other myofascial/myocutaneous flaps in head and neck cancer reconstruction: experience with 437 cases at a single institution.

BACKGROUND Pectoralis major and other myofascial/myocutaneous flaps have been recognized as important reconstructive methods in head and neck cancer surgery. Even with the worldwide use of free flaps, they are still the mainstay reconstructive procedures in many centers. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the records of patients with head and neck cancer who underwent an immediate reconstruc...

Successful reconstruction of large oropharyngeal defect with pectoralis major myocutaneous flap in a four-year-old boy with recurrent fibromatosis

BACKGROUND Pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMMC) flap continues to be the workhorse in head and neck reconstruction. Although free tissue transfer has revolutionized the reconstruction in cancers of the oral region, PMMC is still considered a readily accessible source of vascularized soft tissue available to the reconstructive surgeon and especially in most developing nations where due to the co...

Vertical platysma myocutaneous flap reconstruction for T2-staged oral carcinoma.

The surgical resection of tumour-affected oral soft tissue structures often leads to tissue defects. Various techniques can be used for reconstruction. Our experience of using a vertical platysma myocutaneous flap in a group of patients who underwent reconstruction after T2-staged oral cancer surgical resection associated with neck dissection is described. Only one patient required a surgical r...

A modified pectoralis major myocutaneous flap technique with improved vascular supply and an extended rotation arc for oral defects: A case report

The pedicled pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMMC) flap is versatile, and is widely used for the treatment of surgical defects following oral cancer resection. Although free-tissue transfer of a vascularized free flap is often preferred, the clinical benefits of the PMMC flap should not be overlooked. The conventional technique of harvesting a PMMC flap involves a single vascular supply from the...
